Toni Kearney | Conche, NL
I participated in the Iceberg Treasures & Trails hiking package in August 2012. It was a beautiful summer’s day when we arrived at the Mayflower Inn. When given our information guides and maps, we were given a crash course on how to use our GPS. It was incredibly simple and took all of two minutes! We set off on our merry way first to Barr’d Island Trail in Englee.
We reached the top of the boardwalk and set off into the wooded trail. There were so many butterflies and birds fluttering around, creating a perfect tranquility. We stopped to take in the ocean view at the look outs and breathed in the ocean air! It was amazing. We located our geocache after much anticipation, signed the log book and decided to venture to the Underground Salmon Pool to find our next treasure.
The Underground Salmon Pool was crazy awesome! Being a resident of the area and this being my first time there I was blown away. Watching the salmon jump from the river was so much fun. I can’t believe I never visited the Salmon Pool sooner. We saw so many birds, and even a rabbit!
After searching for the treasure, we found it! Then we ready to head on home to Conche for our last hike and to find our last treasure. Conche being one of the longer hikes, we made sure we had a lunch and plenty of water before heading out. Upon arriving at the Glass Hole lookout later that evening, we were again blown away by the breathtaking view. Here we had a picnic and took plenty of pictures. While munching, a bald eagle flew across our view. Kittiwakes were circling the skies all evening. The day ended with a beautiful pink sunset… Iceberg Trails & Treasures IS A MUST for all ages.
